OK, the next one up is the big four oh! Am I bothered about being 40? No, they do say life is supposed to start then. Not sure why, but maybe I will find out! It could be because not long after the kids will leave the nest, off to university (hopefully) and I can devote more time to my husband. His health hasn’t been too good, so I will welcome the chance to give him more of my time.
Some years ago my hubby started having attacks of pancreatitis. Apparently the usual cause is either too much alcohol or gall stones, but he doesn’t drink and tests have shown his gall bladder is fine. The doctors labelled the cause as ‘idiopathic’ which I’m told means ‘pecular to him’ but which I suspect means ‘we don’t know’! The first two attacks resulted in spells in two different hospitals and the message received on leaving hospital was the same in both cases: there is no treatment. It seemed strange in this day and age so I started searching the internet and found a hospital where doctors had successfully treated the illness for more than 20 years with a concoction of antioxidants and vitamins. Why didn’t doctors in the other hospitals know about this treatment? Surely it would be sensible to have a shared database that doctors could refer to if they don’t have expertise in a particular illness? Anyway, my husband started on a course of tablets. However, one of the side effects of pancreatitis is food passes through the body very quickly and he wasn’t getting much benefit. Back to the Internet (what would we do without it?) and I found aloe vera gel, a juice drink that is abundant in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Being a liquid the aloe vera gel didn’t pass straight through him and it worked miracles. No more attacks and his general health has improved. The anti-inflammatory action of the aloe vera keeps his pancreas in order, and the boost to his immune system is a big bonus.
So, forty here we come. Do you worst! I’m going to enjoy it.
